Climate-Friendly Home Energy

Improving your home heating by making climate-friendly home improvements is one of the best ways you can reduce your emissions and it can help you stay toasty. There’s free advice to help you decide on what improvements are right for you and funding to help with the cost of installing things like insulation and a heat pump.

Why Improving Your Home Heating Matters

For the majority, the places where we spend most of our time are heated by fossil fuels and generate around 22% of Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions. On top of this, many buildings in Scotland aren’t well insulated which means they require more energy to heat and bills are more expensive.

Making changes to the way you heat your home isn’t only good for the planet, it can make you feel cosier and installing things like insulation could help save you money too. That’s why we're helping Scottish households improve their home heating by providing a range of schemes that offer funding and free advice, whatever stage of the journey you’re on.

Help to improve your home heating and make it more energy efficient

You could get government funded support up to £15,000 to install both insulation and a heat pump (that’s money you don’t have to pay back), with additional interest free loans available. Increased funding is also available for rural and island locations. To see full details on grants and loans visit the Home Energy Scotland website.

Our journey to net zero requires us all to make bigger lifestyle changes. It will benefit our wellbeing, the economy and the wider environment. So let’s do net zero together.

What we're doing

By 2045, it’s the Scottish Government’s vision that our homes and buildings will be warmer, more climate-friendly, and more efficient. Scotland has committed at least £1.8 billion to speed up and scale up heat decarbonisation in our homes and workplaces, with particular consideration to those in vulnerable situations.

To get to our target of net zero by 2045 we need to change the way we heat our homes and buildings so that we stop emissions escaping into the atmosphere. This isn’t going to be easy and will take all of us, at every level, to achieve - from policymakers and businesses to families and individuals. Our new Heat in Buildings Strategy outlines the plan for transforming how we heat our homes and workplaces.
