Composting food waste

Some of the food we throw away is unavoidable - food we can't eat like banana skins, peelings, teabags, bones, or eggshells.

Instead of throwing it straight into the kitchen bin, you can help the environment by using a food waste collection service or you can compost much of it.

How to compost food waste at home

You can compost some food waste in a composting bin or heap at home. Add them to any garden waste you compost.

What to compost

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings and scraps
  • Tea bags
  • Coffee grounds
  • Eggshells

What not to compost

  • Cooked food
  • Meat and fish
  • Dairy products
  • Bread
  • Biscuits
  • Baked goods
  • Pasta

These will attract vermin as they rot.

You can find a range of compost bins at most garden centres or online. Some compost bins will be suitable for more foods than others. Always follow the instructions for use.
